At first glance it’s kind of hard to find my sister in this picture…..except for her hair. Perry and I made a day trip to L.A. today to pick up some fabric and do some shopping. I got a lot of hugs from employees and owners I see around the district….it was really sweet….especially because some of them can be all business and no chit chat. Some of the big warehouses we go to are a little intimidating. Here’s Perry in the basement of one climbing up the stacks to cut a sample for me:
Here I am looking over some rolls:
We visited my friend Rafi at Avant Trims on Maple Street to check out some trims. He and his mother Lea also have a huge store Target Trim on the corner of San Pedro and 9th. Love them. Lea even calls me occasionally to see how I’m doing. Stop in and see them next time you are in the fabric district and tell them I sent you! I always comment on these funny little floral dogs in the flower district….I finally snapped a pic this time:
Oh, before we went to L.A. we stopped at IKEA. I love this picnic style table…..maybe for our patio one day? Perry and I ate IKEA hotdogs for lunch.
The coolest thing of the day…..passing a windmill blade. We couldn’t believe how big it was. It was bigger than a whale. Perry said it looked like a surfboard for Godzilla:
While one of our fabric orders was filled we stopped by Paul’s Kitchen for the best Chinese food. It’s on San Pedro and 10th. It’s been there for like 40 years. It looks like a hole-in-the wall from the outside but inside is really nice and great for sitting down for a meal…..there’s a great bar if you want to eat by yourself.
10 hours later we are home! I felt really good today…..but I still think my blood counts are really low. I could feel my legs buckling as I climbed stairs in one of the warehouses….they are so weak. Tomorrow morning I meet with Dr. L to see if I do chemo tomorrow. I’m kind of hoping for a “snow day”…..I feel like another round might kill me right now. It will be my 23rd week of chemotherapy but hopefully my last. I seriously contemplated not showing up this week. Cisplatin yuck. Oh, guess what!? I have some hair growing back on my head……just not on the sides. I’ll have a mohawk soon. I’m losing my eyebrows though all the sudden. I haven’t had to shave anywhere else in weeks. Awesome.

I envy you getting to fabric shop today. I hope to one day get out to that part of the country and shop, shop, shop.
Will be continuing to pray for you and yours.
glad you had a great day with Perry! those little floral dogs are cute and weird all at once…XO Bev
Thanks so much for sharing your day’s adventure with your sister. Fun to enjoy it vicariously, dear lady!
Lots of loving prayers sent up to our dear Father for your healing.
Keep on Choosing Joy, Ashley! You are such a joy to others just by being you and sharing so freely.
The whole not shaving thing is something I could definitely get used to. But I’m not sure the trade offs are worth it. Still thinking of you. Hang in there. Glad you seem to be hanging in well. Hugs.
sounds like a fun day
I love love the meatballs at Ikea!
I saw those blades today on the fwy too..I was getting on on Jackson to Super Target and they passed by…Couldn’t figure out what they were for, now I know THX!:-)
Glad you had an awesome fabric shopping day:-)
Ashley ~ HOW can you process ALL that fabric – it “looks” like such a mess!!! Reminds me of Old Navy stores – can’t find a thing in there cause there’s waaaay to much “stuff!” However – a trip to a fabric store . . . LOVE!!
Smiles,
Laurie Ayers
I would LOVE to live close to you & LA & shop at the District! -so jealous.
Love the fabric district. So glad to see that you’re not feeling too bad. And yay for not having to shave!
Praying for you always.
I think I was at Avant last week – They had amazing feather trim that I was drooling over!! THANK YOU for the restaurant recommendation -I always leave there starving because I don’t want to eat bacon wrapped hot dogs! San Pedro and 10th…need to remember that!
Praying for snow for you tomorrow. xoxox
Sounds like a heavenly day! I was out visiting family in Orange cnty this past week and hit the district… Wish I had these recommendations to go on. I always get so overwhelmed by the little stores stuffed to the gills with fabric. I did get some nice fabrics though! Hope tomorrow is a good day for you!
Oooo…I think that jumping around on ginormous bolts of fabric sounds like my fairy-tale dream sequence. Add in Godzilla on a giant surf-board and, wow, someone call Hollywood. We’d have a winner! Ok, ok…maybe not.
I’m so glad that you had a great time with your sister! Praying for much strength in whatever direction you have to journey tomorrow.
As always…Hugs from Indiana!
Looks like a lot of fun!! also praying for snow for you tmrw
)
Love u, Ashley!
what i wouldn’t do to get to that fabric district! looks like so much fun!
sounds like you had a great day with perry!
hopefully godzilla got his surfboard in time to catch a wave or two today!!!
love the fuzz, good luck tomorrow! will keep you in my prayers.
I haven’t been down there in a long time. Still looks like lots of fun. Aren’t sisters wonderful to have around. You will be in my prayers tomorrow!
I am so glad you are enjoying time with your sister and feeling pretty good. Yo look great. You truly are an inspiration to me and I am working on a website right now to tell my story and have an outlet where I can journal my “stuff” and thanks to you, I am learning to Choose Joy.
Aside from that, I am so jealous of your trips to the fashion district! I live in Temple City, so its only 15-20 minutes from there, just off the 10 (you drive right by me on the way there) – so I have gone a couple of times, but I get there – get so overwhelmed, and then just kinda wonder and have no clue what I am doing. It is just plain sad! I have read blogs on how-to’s and made lists but then I just get freaked out. I need someone that is use to it, to show me the ins and outs of the fashion district. My secret dream (when you are better of course) is to hang out with you, soak up your positive joy (which I really need right now) and go to the fashion district for some retail therapy, and maybe soak up your crafting ideas… you are such a bright light, and you are changing lives and I thank you. I feel kinda silly writing this, like one of those super fans, or something… but someday I will write a post of what you mean to me, cause my life has been at an ultimate low and finding your blog came at the right moment.
Hugs…
oh and PS – those flower puppies are bizarre. So many of them and I have always wondered if anybody actually bought them?
Glad you and Perry are having so much fun, I pray you have a day off so you can really have so fun times without old Cisplatin butting in. If I ever get that way I am so doing the fabric trip looks like bolts of fun. Keeping you in my prayers
Wow!!! Fabric overload… but I still think it would be fun to check all of it out along with those trims. I would love to see all of that … even if I am in a daze…. …plus how long does it take them to cut what you need? HA! So glad you were able to get out and spend time with your sister. I hope today goes well. Sending you positive thoughts and prayers!!!
The fabric shopping looks like so much fun! I don’t think you could ever get me out of there if I went– i have to look at everything.
Hoping you get the “snow day” that you deserve.
Oh, and I wanted to thank you for sharing the info about Dr. Singha’s Mustard Bath. I ordered some after I read your post and tried it for the first time last night. I really felt energized after sweating in the bath for 20min! I think it will really help me with the muscle pain I have. I never would have found it without your post, so Thank You!
Yay for new fabric! And if you feel so inclined, I will take 5 yards of that orange on orange stripe knit!
I think I saw two windmill blades going down the freeway last week. It was on the 210, so maybe they were coming out of that Windmill farm past Palm Springs? haha I thought they were airplane wings… windmill blades makes so much sense!
SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT DAY…I’M SO HAPPY YOU WERE OUT IN ABOUT…ENJOYING THE BEAUTIFUL DAY! I LOVE PAUL KITCHEN HAVEN’T BEEN THERE FOR YEARS. MAKES ME WANT TO GO OUT THERE. LAST TIME I WENT TO AZ AND WAS PASSING THE WIND MILLS AND IT REMINDING ME OF YOU…IT’S FUNNY HOW YOU CROSS MY MIND WHEN SEEING A WINDMILL AND WE NEVER MET.HAVE A JOYFUL DAY!
You are phenomenal and an inspiration to us all.
Have a good day today… I just prayed for you!
R
Those blades are made down the road from me, here in good ole Oklahoma!!!!
do you ever go to El Tepeyacs in E LA when you go for fabric and trims? Hollenbeck Burrito? It is close to the catholic church and cemetery. foos fantatic and also needs to share the food as it is not
I LOVE IKEA!!! When I’m bored or want to walk around in a crowd I go to IKEA! I love the cinnamon rolls! DH and I have found that the foil pack buns are always fresher than the singles because they don’t suffer from heat lamp rigormortis. I have also seen those blades going by on a train- it’s freakish, I always feel small, because they are SO HUGE! I end up staring at them til they are all gone. I work across the street from some main tracks… actually really close to the intersection so I HEAR ALL the HONKS/HORNS/CHOOs…lol… I was joking just the other day that I could easily come up with another meaning for BNSF… (mwah ha ha ha) I’m not a train hater by any means- I love the *distant* whir of them .. emphasis on distant… lol Love your blog! You are are such an inspiration to me.
When I went with Ashley, we were thinking if a slight earthquake had come, we would have never been found in the avalanche of massive fabric!!! I was overwhelmed with it all and in awe to see Ashley just buzzing around cutting a sample here and there, putting it all together with such ease!! You are awesome, Ashley!!! This is a dangerous place for fabricaholics like Perry, Ashley and me!! mom
