How to Antique and Age Wood Instantly for a Weathered Look

How to Antique and age wood instantly with items you p (weathering wood with vinegar and steel wool)

This is one of my favorite tricks that I use with home decor….a simple solution of white vinegar and steel wool.  You can use it to age brand new wood to varying degrees depending on how the solution ages.

Supplies:
Wood
White Distilled Vinegar
0000 Steel Wool*

For the sign:
8″ Oil Board Stencils
Black spray paint

*I prefer the fine graded because it disintegrates faster.

Aging Wood: Vinegar & Steel Wool Solution (steel and vinegar wood stain directions) #diy #tutorial #distressed #antique

To make the mixture you pour vinegar into a bowl or jar and add steel wool (without the soap kind!):

The trick is figuring out how long to age it.  A solution left to age just 15 minutes will produce different effect than a solution left aging for hours, months or years.

Here is a solution left aging for 15 minutes where the vinegar has just started to disintegrate the steel wool.  One or two coats of the mixture leaves just a light gray barn-wood like finish:

Leaving the solution to age a few more hours will produce a darker gray finish:

I keep varying solutions in jars because if you leave it long enough the steel wool disintegrates completely and the mixture is allowed to produce rust, adding a reddish brown tone.

How to Make Personalized Burlap Bags

Gift Idea for Bridesmaids, Wedding Party, Graduation Etc: How to Make Personalized Burlap Bags via Ashley Hackshaw / lilblueboo.com #burlap #diy #tutorial #wedding #rustic #diywedding

Love burlap…and I love these burlap bags from Dharma Trading. I thought they’d make great gifts or even stylish reusable grocery bags:

Use Blank Burlap or Jute Bags via Ashley Hackshaw / lilblueboo.com

Supplies:
Burlap or Jute Bags
Supersoft Transfer Paper
Ink Jet Printer
Iron

There are several ways you can personalize the bags:

1. Silk screening or freezer paper stencils. (see my Beach Bag Tote tutorial here)
2. Spray paint with stencils
3. Fabric applique
4. Transfer Paper

I chose transfer paper for these particular bags because I wante pretty detailed graphics and it takes way too much patience to hand cut a stencil for something like that.

First, I created this little “Groceries” graphic in Photoshop. If I’m making a graphic that prints out onto multiple pages I usually use Powerpoint to size and print it because it turns out easier to visualize and match up. I printed out the graphic onto Super Soft Transfer paper:

I carefully cut out my graphic and made sure the two sides matched up, placing them face down onto the burlap bag.  Pressing a hot iron for a few minutes (careful not to burn the paper or bag!) transfers the image to the bag: CONTINUE READING

How to Make a Custom Skateboard and Grip Tape Design

How to make and paint a custom skateboard (custom grip tape to custom design) Great birthday party idea, Christmas gift, etc. via lilblueboo.com #skateboard #diy #griptape #custom #tutorial #gifts #handmadegifts

Boo has been asking for a skateboard so I thought I’d make one for her using a blank board. I just finished it up and took it out for a test run today. My skateboarding skills are a little rusty…I think it’s been 25 years since I was on one:

It rides pretty well!  A custom skateboard would be a great Christmas gift or even an auction donation….or just hanging on the wall for a shelf or custom decor.

A Pumpkin House Number

*Sorry for the lack of posting the last two weeks! I moved to a new server and that took a few days to get all the glitches out. Then I was locked out of WordPress and couldn’t update anything. Finally back on track! Hopefully you find the website a little faster now.  -Ashley

Carving a House Number into a Pumpkin via lilblueboo.com #pumpkins #mpumpkins #halloween

I usually buy pumpkins that we can use year after year. Sometimes we end up with a fresh one too. Here is a selection from Michaels this year:

To carve the foam pumpkin it’s helpful to have a heated craft knife. It cuts it like a knife through butter:

First I cut the lid off:

How to Make Altered Thrift Store Pop Art

How to Make Altered Thrift Store Pop Art via lilblueboo.com

There’s nothing I love more than scooping up something that someone else doesn’t want anymore….and making it my own.  My friend was selling this HUGE dinosaur at her yard sale and I couldn’t resist.  I knew I’d either paint over it to reuse the canvas….or maybe change it up a bit.  Mr. LBB loved the dino but Boo thought it was too scary.  So I changed him up a bit to be more of a pop art dino!

Here’s the before:

In the new issue of Moyo Magazine I wrote a column about DIY Party Decor:

…..a few photos were used from the projects below but I thought I’d share some additional photos that are centered around DIY stamping!  It’s very easy to carve your own stamp…and depending on the theme of your party or gathering a single stamp can carry all the way through:

Add tiny accents (dots, stars, hearts etc) with a smaller stamp made from a pencil eraser:

For these invitations I printed out the “Home Sweet Home” on regular card stock, rounded the corners of each invite and added the stamp:

Cyanotype Blueprints

How to sun print on fabric (cyanotype) via lilblueboo.com

When Boo and I were making our pinhole camera I wanted to teach her how 35mm film worked.  I gave her this pack of cyanotype fabric and let her decide what to use from around the house to make her prints. Cyanotype is what they used to reproduce blueprints and diagrams a hundred years ago or more……those pretty architectural type drawings you wish you’d find in a thrift store one day (or at least I’m always looking for them!)? Cyanotype is basically a photographic printing process that results in a blue or “cyan” print.

I gave Boo a clipboard to lay the fabric on as she took each piece one at a time out of the “light proof” bag (it took a few reminders that she had to make sure to close it back up carefully):
