An Eco-Friendly Kitchen

We recently went solar…50 solar panels installed on the roof of our house.  It’s exciting to try to be more green.

So now my new focus is to try and reduce waste in the kitchen. We’ve done pretty good until now….we always have way more recycling than trash:

I think paper towels were our guilty pleasure.  I recently added a drawer full of white hand towels to a drawer in the kitchen.  You can buy them in bulk (I got mine at Costco):

Now instead of using a gazillion paper towels each day we use far less.  It’s easy to grab a quick towel….much easier than the “re-useable” paper towel system I think.

I even use them to mop….as reusable “swiffer” attachments:

All the used hand towels have a place to collect when they are dirty too:

Top 10 Party Tips and Behind the Scenes

Behind the Scenes: A Beauty Salon Glam Birthday Party with Mini Doll Salon via

Here’s the behind the scenes from Boo’s party and some of my tips for preparing a similar party….or any party for that matter!  You can see the full original Party Post with all the pretty photos here.

The decor was actually pretty simple.

I like to set up one main food and treat table that is the backdrop of the party…..hanging different types of poms.  I bought the pink tissue poms this year but the rest of the poms are from past parties. The lanterns are great because they are large and fold flat easily. I just recycle them all and repaint them if necessary. Spray paint is a great way to get all decor to match perfectly!

I have a sun problem on our patio for early parties….so last year I bought 2 bolts of 108″ muslin to cover the entire patio and block out the sun!  We hang it from the roof (a few gallon jugs filled with water are great to keep it in place if you have a flat patio…..other wise a few nails can keep it up)….it folds up easily for storage too. The best part is that I can pin bunting and other party decor to it…..and you can create a great backdrop for photos.

I always buy generic type items that can be reused year after year. I also look for items that can be packed away easily in a large bin. I just re-spraypaint items to match the new theme.  I have large white bowls and platters that can be used with any theme. I use large paper mache nesting boxes and hat boxes to add height to the tables (just re-spraypaint them!)

Tips for Creating Simple and Timeless Photo Albums

Tips for Creating Simple and Timeless Photo Albums via

One of the most gratifying things for me is finishing up a yearly album.  I’m always usually about a year behind but that time allows me to make sure every photo is printed and organized.  I always seem to have random photos show up mid-year and it would drive me nuts if those weren’t in the yearly album.  Boo loves to keep me company while I put albums together because I talk about the photos as I go and tell stories:

After I did my How to Organize and Print YEARS worth of Photos tutorial I had numerous requests for a post on how I actually assemble my albums… I took photos as I finished 2010’s album up this weekend.  I always find that if you have YEARS worth of albums to make start with the most recent year you are ready to work on and move backwards. A few thoughts about album making before I start with the tips:

I think photos and photo albums are one of the only things that really give me true anxiety…..because it’s so easy to get behind!  The only way that I can keep myself from worrying about it all is having a system.  I thought I’d lay out my system since it works well for me…..and maybe it will help someone else!  I’m sure there are lots of ways to do this….but here’s what works for me since I get easily distracted! Most of this is geared towards a Mac system but it can be easily applied to a PC as well.  Let’s get started!
