Martha eat your heart out. I labeled 70 boxes yesterday with vintage-inspired labels. It’s part of my big office makeover. I can’t show you the office yet because it’s a disaster. Anyway, it took almost all day to organize the boxes and create the labels but I feel really organized now:
The shelves were an early Christmas present from Mr. LBB. This area is a hallway behind my office….technically it’s a “butler’s pantry” for serving food and storage but it’s the perfect area to store supplies right off my work area. The wall space above the countertop was just empty space. The area used to be a huge sunken living room before we remodeled a few years ago. We added a wall at the end of the room to create the storage space.
Here’s what it looked like two weeks ago:
One of the most gratifying things for me is finishing up a yearly album. I’m always usually about a year behind but that time allows me to make sure every photo is printed and organized. I always seem to have random photos show up mid-year and it would drive me nuts if those weren’t in the yearly album. Boo loves to keep me company while I put albums together because I talk about the photos as I go and tell stories:
After I did my How to Organize and Print YEARS worth of Photos tutorial I had numerous requests for a post on how I actually assemble my albums…..so I took photos as I finished 2010′s album up this weekend. I always find that if you have YEARS worth of albums to make start with the most recent year you are ready to work on and move backwards. A few thoughts about album making before I start with the tips:
I think photos and photo albums are one of the only things that really give me true anxiety…..because it’s so easy to get behind! The only way that I can keep myself from worrying about it all is having a system. I thought I’d lay out my system since it works well for me…..and maybe it will help someone else! I’m sure there are lots of ways to do this….but here’s what works for me since I get easily distracted! Most of this is geared towards a Mac system but it can be easily applied to a PC as well. Let’s get started!
I made these little illustrated doodle labels to label my office supplies with. You can download all three templates (plain, lined and with editable text) at the bottom of the post! CONTINUE READING
With an easy technique you can transform any new crate into an old rustic looking one! I made the above one for Boo’s Easter basket this year…..adding her name and a bunny to the side. I bought the below new mini-crate from Michael’s Craft store using my coupon and it was only a few bucks:
I used my Silhouette Machine to cut “Sienna” out of vinyl shelf paper to use as a stencil….I also cut out a bunny shapes for the sides. I placed the stencils on the crate and used black spray paint:
The spray painted images:
I mixed a solution of white distilled vinegar, steel wool, and tea to apply to the wood. You can see the full tutorial on the process here (the wine barrel lazy susan tutorial) but basically the vinegar reacts with the steel wool and creates an aging effect on the wood. I add the tea to add a bit of “tea stain” to the wood.
As it is applied the wood gets a little darker…..but you won’t see the full effect until the wood dries. You can even rub the steel wool on the wood for extra age but I recommend using some gloves.
The finished crate! It will look so cute filled with paper grass and some handmade goodies and treats!
I was organizing the studio today and needed a way to store some important artwork so it didn’t get damaged…..so I made a few easy portfolios for storage! They open up flat to lay the artwork in….
….and then fold up and tie to keep the artwork safe and flat. You could make one for each year to hold your kiddo’s precious art pieces from school….or use it to hold large photos for transport if you are a photographer.
I think one of the most important ingredients in organizing is shelving! I designed and built every single one of our closets (I like to surprise Mr. LBB when he gets home from work with a finished project.) I used Easy Closets to design each closet and a few days later the UPS truck showed up at our doorstep with 52 boxes of pre-cut shelving, hardware, instructions etc. Every box was numbered and the instructions went step by step through each closet. It was easy. I went with the simplest systems (white, no molding and brushed nickel hardward) and they are the highest quality (3/4″ thick melamine):

Today is all about organizing handbags! Check out the new area of my closet dedicated just to purses, handbags and backpacks:

I loved some aluminum bins I spotted on Pinterest that Beneath my heart had hung on the wall and knew they’d be the perfect solution for a blank wall in my pantry. I found these large aluminum beverage tubs at Michaels recently:
To create holes for hanging I took a large nail and punched 2 holes in the back of each tub about 10 inches apart:
Once the holes were punched I used them to mark the wall and then used a level to make sure the hole marks were at the same height. Then I used matching aluminum screws to attach each bin to the wall:
The top bin holds “unopened snacks” like chips and pretzels…..and the bottom two (that Boo can reach) are snacks that are open and ready to eat!
Many more posts to come! I’ll show you shelving, tips, electronic storage etc in my new series:
