How to Import VHS Tapes into iMovie

How to import vhs into iMovie via lilblueboo.com

I’ve been helping my friend Daren transfer some of his old acting demo clips from VHS to digital format. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to create a step-by-step tutorial for transferring VHS to iMovie because I know you’ve been asking for a while now.

First of all…..how cute is Daren?!  I loved watching all of these episodes….brought back so many memories: Wonder Years, Hunter, My Sister Sam, Growing Pains. You can click the image below and see the clips on IMDB:

I’m still trying to talk Daren into letting me run his fan club.

Ok, on to the step-by-step:

First of all, it’s pretty easy to import a VHS tape into iMovie for editing….but it involves a few steps because the VHS has to be converted into a digital format first.  I do this using my Sony Digital 8 Handycam. I record the VHS tape onto the Handycam and then import recorded footage into iMovie.  I’ve got two tips to getting this done:

Ok now to get started! To convert VHS to digital format using a handycam you’ll need the following which you can probably find from a neighbor or friend:

Digital 8 Handycam (DVC)
Audio Video TV Out AV Cable
Any VCR
Fire Wire Cable
Fire Wire Cable Adapters (if needed)

The first step is connecting the Handycam to a VCR.  This is done with a simple Audio Video TV Out AV Cable….you probably already have one sitting around somewhere. It has the 3 colored plugs on one side and an earphone like plug on the other side.

Here’s a closeup of where to plug each side of the AV cable into:

Next, insert a blank tape into the Handycam (DVC)….or one that you don’t mind recording over.  Turn the DVC on to VCR mode:

The Office Makeover: Craft Storage (Free Vintage Label Download)

Martha eat your heart out. I labeled 70 boxes yesterday with vintage-inspired labels.  It’s part of my big office makeover. I can’t show you the office yet because it’s a disaster. Anyway, it took almost all day to organize the boxes and create the labels but I feel really organized now:

The shelves were an early Christmas present from Mr. LBB.  This area is a hallway behind my office….technically it’s a “butler’s pantry” for serving food and storage but it’s the perfect area to store supplies right off my work area.  The wall space above the countertop was just empty space.  The area used to be a huge sunken living room before we remodeled a few years ago. We added a wall at the end of the room to create the storage space.

Here’s what it looked like two weeks ago:

I Heart Organizing

I really do love organizing. If I could spend ALL day organizing I would…..but I’d bore everyone. We spent the whole weekend cleaning out the house…..getting rid of things we don’t need and organizing closets and cabinets. Lisa walked in this morning and asked where did everything go? Success!

Boo and I cleaned her closet and drawers out.  Then we moved her desk from the playroom into her room.  She was so excited….and spend a few hours organizing her desk drawers.  The horse lamp was mine….my dad brought it back from overseas when I was little:

Office Panorama

Fun with the new iPhone panorama function last night:

The right side of my office:

A photo wall in my hall.  I think I like the curved wall effect. Maybe I should remodel:

How did I manage that wall? It was pretty easy actually. I used my laser level run tape all the way down the hall for the top and bottom line. Then I made an identically spaced tape line on my guest room carpet. I arranged the photo frames on the floor first, then transferred them to the wall.  As long as the top and bottom edges of the top and bottom frames line up the middle ones won’t matter as much!

Clean Your Room – A How-To Guide

Heather Boissonneau, graphic designer and mom of two, designed this step-by-step guide to take her kids through the complete process of cleaning their rooms using a series of very simple steps.

Help kids to clean their room with this how-to guide printable by HB Design via lilblueboo.com

It neatly answers the questions her children usually ask during room cleaning time like: “Where do I start?” and “What do I do next?” It also helps to settle the debate around when the room is actually “finished” (A.K.A. Mom’s definition of finished as opposed to the children’s definition of finished) which, at least in Heather’s house, typically means that they are finished cleaning regardless of the state of the room. Make a Portfolio: Easy, DIY Artwork or Photo Storage (A Tutorial)

Make a Portfolio: Easy, DIY Artwork or Photo Storage via lilblueboo.com

I was organizing the studio today and needed a way to store some important artwork so it didn’t get damaged…..so I made a few easy portfolios for storage! They open up flat to lay the artwork in….

….and then fold up and tie to keep the artwork safe and flat.  You could make one for each year to hold your kiddo’s precious art pieces from school….or use it to hold large photos for transport if you are a photographer.

A Junk Jar (A Tutorial)

We no longer have a junk drawer in our house……it’s a junk jar. It’s more of an art piece as our discarded and lost junk collects and fills it up:

Instead of throwing items into the back of a drawer, now everyone can see into the jar for what they might be looking for:

Doll Clothing Storage

Mr. Lil Blue Boo surprised Boo’s dolls with their own section of the closet. He moved around the shelves we use to store Boo’s shoes, spray painted a 1″ dowel and used some existing hardware we already had to make a hanging rod:
